This averages out to approximately 36 seconds per question. The Math section is the longest, with 60 minutes to complete 60 questions. But there is good news! Students have 35 minutes to complete 40 questions on both the Reading and Science sections, which means you have 52 seconds per question or a little less than nine minutes for each of the four Reading passages and a little less than six minutes for each of the six Science passages. These questions may appear in any section. To give students the extra time to answer more questions, the tests include a fifth section with regular and pretest questions. We recommend students give it their best effort here. Students should treat the experimental section as if it were any of the prior sections they encountered on the test.
Perhaps the most important function of the experimental section is to guarantee fairness on the test across all demographic subgroups and the responses to these pretest questions provide key data points.
