Its the blood of the engine :- Jamie. Posted March 21, Thanks again. The truth is as long as viscosity grade is correct there is not much difference in specs of quality synthetic oils except those for PD engines.

VW PD engines need the correct oil which however is suitable for general use. VW particularly have a large number of oil specs and oil used should match not only the engine type, but the year of manufacture and service interval. Believe it or not Ford do not make oil, they sell oil to the correct spec sold in Ford cans made by A N Other used to be Total. Many other manufacturers sell oil that meets exactly the same specs. But on a kit car with none of the Ford emission stuff fitted the only spec that matters is 5w On a trackday its possibly a good idea to use 5w40 if your oil temps get very high or better still use 5w30 ester synthetic.

Crank bearings are simply not clever enough to tell if its Ford oil or not. Between and we had 3 Fords that all required oil to the normal Ford spec. Our local dealer serviced all 3 cars and never put a drop of Ford oil in them, he used Shell Gemini which met the Ford specs. Keyless theft: What is it and how do you stop it?

Or is the 30 equally important, such that 5W would be bad for the engine, being thicker when hot? And what about the possible effects of using 0W and 0W? The word "correct" notwithstanding, I'm interested in any other angles on this issue too.

Tue 6 Jun Ford Zetec engines: oil - Galaxy. I myself always use 5W as recommended by Mr Ford. However, I know that a lot of garages put 5W in because they don't keep 5W in stock.

Fast-Fit places are infamous for doing this. I have heard of thicker oils causing problems with the hydraulic tappets but later Zetec engines don't have hydraulic tappets, so that shouldn't be a problem on a later engine. Ford recommend 5W; why bother buying anything else? The other problem, particularly on the Sigma engines 1. The cam bearings are integral with the head, so any bearing problems require a complete replacement cylinder head. These engines are bombproof if correctly serviced, so it's not worth the risk, IMO.

Tue 6 Jun Ford Zetec engines: oil - kithmo. The Ford oil is a A1. The 5W is thin enough to circulate quickly when cold and thick enough to give adequate protection.

Tue 6 Jun Ford Zetec engines: oil - Statistical outlier. I'd have to disagree.
